Renato Ratti並非出生在酒農之家，他的父親是一位醫生，祖父則是一位獸醫，Renato年輕時在Alba學習釀酒，21歲前往巴西開始釀酒生涯，用十年時間研究南美葡萄酒之後，在31歲回到了Barolo，尋到風土寶地般的Abbey of l'Annunziata教堂，買下四周的葡萄園創建了自己的酒莊，也開啟了產區的升級之路。

一開始，高瞻遠矚的Renato Ratti就沒有循規蹈矩的複製當地傳統，而是出乎相鄰意料的釀製了一款Marcenasco單一園Barolo，也從此打響了名聲。

Renato Ratti跟同時期釀酒師Elio Altare等人思想一致，旨在透過更新酒窖科技釀製果味更為濃郁、更適宜提早飲用的葡萄酒，把當地傳統上30-60天的浸漬和發酵時間縮短至10-14天，他宣揚使用噴淋的方法來保持葡萄皮和酒液的接觸，降低單寧的萃取度。

同時，Renato還在釀造過程中引進了當時僅有少數幾位釀酒師使用的蘋果乳酸發酵，又先鋒性地將木桶熟化的時間減少到2年，減少了無效的長時間熟化帶來的並不討喜的單寧感。更進一步完善了葡萄酒的裝瓶工藝，而這也對Barolo葡萄酒在瓶中的陳年潛力產生了深遠影響。

Barolo產區分級制度的奠基者

上世紀末，在意大利著名酒評家Luigi Veronelli的引領下，許多人開始想到把葡萄園按照品質來劃分並建立Barolo的等級制度。

Renato同樣篤信釀造偉大Barolo的秘訣取決於葡萄園，經過多年拜訪當地資深酒農和酒商，以及對朗格山區土壤、地形等展開的大量研究，終於在70年代中期完成了第一份Barolo地圖，並在這張地圖上為Barolo劃分出了168個獨立葡萄園，彼時Renato才40來歲。

這項史無前例的壯舉為Renato Ratti贏得了一片喝采，而這張地圖就是流傳至今的Ratti Barolo 葡萄園分級圖。 1976年，他又針對Barbaresco產區繪製了類似的地圖。

1985年，Renato更新了自己的Barolo地圖，並仿效Burgundy的葡萄園分級將這些葡萄園分為三個不同的級別，其中質量最好的葡萄園有10個，即後來的“Barolo Grand Cru‘’。

1988年，Renato英年早逝，那年他的兒子Pietro只有20歲，卻不得不擔起酒莊重擔，如今三十多年過去了，Pietro也沒有令人失望，已經像他父親那樣當選為 Barolo酒農協會Barolo vintners' association主席。但他表示，自己需要做的更多的是傾聽：釀酒是一種需要學習的東西，需要花費幾代人的時間在種植葡萄的過程中累積。 1990年代，Pietro將家族葡萄園擴建，並進一步加強了各子產區獨特葡萄品種的研究。 2002年，酒莊的Annunziata酒窖開始建造，以紀念並延續Renato先生從1965年開始所創造的釀酒傳統。
