As usual including some declassified premier cru fruit, Glantenay's 2022 Volnay Village wafts from the glass with aromas of rose petals, sweet berries and cherries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and suave palate that's layered, pure and harmoniously balanced. The unassuming but passionate Thierry Glantenay continues to produce delicious, sensual wines in his cellars in Volnay. In 2020, he put an end to roganage (trimming the vines) by tractor. instead, Thierry now trims by hand, with shears, letting the canopies grow higher (in emulation of his upstairs neighbor in Les Rugiens, Thomas Bouley). In the winery, Glantenay prefers to let temperature and alcohol do the work of extraction for him, keeping pigéage and rémontage to a minimum during classical macerations in cement vats. He presses gently, and élevage, without racking until the mise en bouteille, takes place in at most 30% new barrels.(WK)

The 2022 Volnay Vieilles Vignes is completely de-stemmed. Brambly red fruit and light tertiary scents on the nose that sports a minor reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, not a complex Volnay, but fresh with fine backbone and respectable mineralité on the finish. *A well-crafted Volnay*.

Thierry Glantenay’s 2022 Volnay “Vieilles Vignes” is really an excellent example of the vintage. The bouquet is pure and precise, offering up scents of red and black cherries, a touch of pomegranate, pigeon, a complex base of dark soil tones, raw cocoa, vanillin oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and tangy in personality, with an excellent core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the well balanced finish. Fine juice in the making.
